European Union

United Kingdom

20% VAT from £0 (collected at checkout for orders ≤£135). Customs duty applies above £135, by UK Global Tariff code.

AliExpress customs — common questions

Do you pay customs on AliExpress orders?

In the US: yes, for China-origin shipments of any value — the $800 de minimis exemption was eliminated in 2025. In the EU: yes, VAT applies from €0 (IOSS collects it at checkout) and customs duty applies above €150. In the UK: VAT from £0 and duty above £135.

How much is import duty on AliExpress?

Duty depends on the product's HS code: electronics accessories 0–25%+, clothing 16–32%, tools ~5–9%, toys 0–30%. US orders from China add Section 301 (7.5–25%) and the flat 10% Section 122 import surcharge on top of the base rate.

Does AliExpress collect duty at checkout?

Sometimes. For EU orders AliExpress collects VAT via IOSS at checkout. For US orders, practice varies by seller and shipping method — some prepay duty (DDP), others ship DDU and the carrier bills you on delivery, often with a $10–30 brokerage fee added.

What happens if I don't pay the customs fee?

The carrier holds the package, then returns or destroys it after the holding period. Unpaid duty isn't waived — refusing delivery usually means losing both the goods and the original payment.

Is dropshipping from AliExpress still viable after de minimis?

The economics changed: every China-direct parcel to the US now carries full duty that someone must pay. Viable models now prepay duty (DDP) and price it in, or bulk-import to a US 3PL and ship domestically. Calculate per-unit landed cost both ways before choosing.
