Shopify Landed Cost:
Know Your True Import Cost
If you sell on Shopify and source products overseas, your supplier invoice is just the beginning. By the time goods reach your warehouse, import duties, freight, and customs fees can add 30–60% to your unit cost. Price your products without accounting for these and you're selling at a loss.
TL;DR: Landed cost = supplier invoice + freight + customs duty + China surcharges (if applicable) + MPF + HMF + brokerage. Use the free Zentria Flow calculator below before placing your next purchase order.
Why Shopify Merchants Get Landed Cost Wrong
Pricing before you know the real cost
Most Shopify merchants set retail prices based on the supplier invoice. By the time the shipment lands, duty + freight can add 30–60% to unit cost — destroying margin on products already live in the store.
Spreadsheet complexity for multi-SKU imports
A single shipment might have 20 SKUs with different HTS codes, different duty rates, and different China surcharges. Manual spreadsheets don't scale — and a single wrong cell can throw off every product.
Shipping from multiple countries
Sourcing from China and Vietnam simultaneously? Each origin has different tariff treatment. Tracking true landed cost by origin country in a spreadsheet is practically impossible.
Rapid tariff changes in 2025–2026
Section 301 rates on Chinese goods changed multiple times since 2024. A static spreadsheet you built last year is almost certainly wrong today.
Landed Cost per Unit =
Supplier FOB price per unit
+ Freight per unit (total freight ÷ units)
+ Customs duty (customs value × HTS rate)
+ Section 301 surcharge China origin
+ MPF + HMF per unit
+ Insurance + brokerage per unit
Worked Example: Shopify Apparel Store
You run a Shopify store selling women's activewear. You're ordering 500 units from a Chinese supplier at $14 FOB each, shipping by sea.
At a $45 retail price, the gross margin after landed cost is ($45 − $22.13) / $45 = 50.8% — before Shopify fees (2.9% + 30¢), returns, and marketing. If you had priced based on the $14 supplier cost alone, you'd be underestimating cost by 58%.
How to Calculate Landed Cost for Your Shopify Products
Connect your Shopify store
Install the Zentria Flow app from the Shopify App Store. One-click OAuth connection — no API keys to manage. Your store, products, and supplier countries are imported automatically.
Select a product or enter a new SKU
Choose any product from your store catalog, or enter a new product description. The AI engine classifies it against the HTS schedule and returns the applicable duty rate for your origin/destination pair.
Enter product value, freight, and origin
Input the FOB unit cost from your supplier invoice, the estimated freight cost per unit, and the origin country. The calculator handles the rest: MFN duty, Section 301 China surcharges, MPF, HMF, and insurance.
Get per-unit landed cost and margin
The result shows you per-unit landed cost, the effective duty rate, a full cost breakdown, and — if you enter your retail price — your gross margin after all import costs. No spreadsheet required.
Shopify Import FAQ
Does Shopify calculate import duty automatically?
Shopify has a built-in 'duties and import taxes' feature for customer-facing checkout, but it does not calculate the importer's landed cost for buying and pricing decisions. Zentria Flow fills this gap — it's a merchant-side tool for calculating what you'll pay when the goods arrive, not what your customer pays.
Can I calculate landed cost before placing a supplier order?
Yes. You don't need an active shipment. Enter the product description, supplier country, estimated FOB value, and expected freight. The tool returns a landed cost estimate you can use for purchase order decisions and retail price setting.
How do I find the HTS code for my Shopify product?
Zentria Flow's AI classifies your product automatically from its title or description. You can also upload a product photo for vision-based classification. For formal customs entries, always verify the classification with your customs broker.
What's the difference between DDP and DAP for Shopify merchants?
Under DAP (Delivered at Place) shipping terms, your customer pays customs duty at delivery — common with international stores. Under DDP (Delivered Duty Paid), you pay duty upfront and price it into the product. Shopify's international checkout calculates customer-facing duties under DDP. Zentria Flow calculates your cost as the importer, regardless of which Incoterm you use with customers.
Do tariffs apply to dropshipping orders under $800?
Yes. The $800 de minimis exemption ended for Chinese goods in May 2025 and for every country on 29 August 2025, so every dropshipped parcel now pays duty — for Chinese goods that means MFN + Section 301 + the 12.5% forced-labor tariff. Build it into your product prices; Zentria Flow shows the per-order figure in Shopify.
