HS Code Reference · Chapter 71
HS Codes for Jewelry 2026
Counterintuitive but true: imitation jewelry pays 11% MFN — double the rate of real gold (5.5–7%) — and loose diamonds enter at 0%. HTS codes, rates and the precious-vs-imitation dividing line, in one table.

MFN = Most Favored Nation rate. S301 = Section 301 additional duty on China-origin goods only. Rates based on USITC HTS 2026. Verify at hts.usitc.gov before import.
The "gold-plated" trap: 7113 vs 7117
Gold-plated brass is imitation jewelry (7117, 11% MFN) — but gold-clad or gold-filled metal qualifies as 7113 (5.8–7%). The technical difference is the bonding method and metal thickness. Declaring plated goods as "gold jewelry" invites CBP reclassification, back duties and penalties; declaring clad goods as imitation overpays ~4–5 points on every shipment.

Jewelry Import Duty — FAQs
Jewelry classifies in Chapter 71. Precious metal jewelry (gold, silver, platinum) falls under heading 7113 at 5–7% MFN. Imitation/costume jewelry falls under 7117 at up to 11% MFN. The dividing line is the metal: anything not precious metal (or not clad with it) is 'imitation' regardless of design quality.
Silver jewelry: 5–13.5% MFN + 7.5% Section 301 (List 4A) + 12.5% forced-labor tariff ≈ 25–33.5%. Imitation jewelry (7117.19.90): 11% + 7.5% + 12.5% = 31%. Loose diamonds and gemstones enter at 0% MFN. Use the calculator with your exact HTS code and origin for the real figure.
7113 = jewelry of precious metal (gold, silver, platinum, palladium) or clad with it. 7117 = imitation jewelry — everything else: brass, steel, plastic, resin, beads. Counterintuitively, imitation jewelry carries the higher duty rate (11% vs 5–7%). Gold-plated brass is 7117 unless the plating qualifies as 'clad'.
Neither — smartwatches with communication functions classify under 8517.62 as data transmission devices (0% MFN). Traditional watches are Chapter 91 with complex compound duties (separate rates on the movement, case, strap and battery). A classification error here is expensive either way.
No — loose diamonds (7102) and most colored gemstones (7103) enter the US at 0% MFN. But diamonds require Kimberley Process certification, and once a stone is set in precious metal the article classifies as jewelry under 7113 and the full metal-jewelry rate applies to the entire value.
Key requirements: FTC jewelry marking rules (karat/fineness stamps must be accurate), lead/cadmium limits for children's jewelry under CPSIA, Kimberley certification for diamonds, and FinCEN anti-money-laundering rules for dealers above thresholds. Customs duty is only part of the compliance picture.
