Frequently Asked Questions

What tariffs does the US impose on Brazilian imports in 2026?

Two Section 301 duties stack on MFN. Since 22 July 2026, USTR's Brazil action adds 25% on most Brazilian goods, and since 24 July 2026 the forced-labor tariff adds 12.5% (Brazil is in the 12.5% tier). Exempt from the 25%: about 870 listed lines including beef, coffee, fruit, energy, many chemicals and fertilizers, plus civil aircraft, pharmaceuticals and Section 232 goods. Section 232 goods (steel, aluminum, copper, autos) pay 50% or 25% under 232 instead of both Section 301 duties.

Is there a US-Brazil free trade agreement?

No. The US and Brazil have no free trade agreement as of 2026. Brazil is a member of Mercosur (along with Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Bolivia), and the EU-Mercosur agreement was finalized in 2024 (awaiting full ratification). The US and Brazil have a Trade and Economic Cooperation Agreement (TECA) and various sectoral agreements but no comprehensive FTA that would reduce tariff rates to 0%.

What do Brazilian companies pay when exporting to the US?

The MFN rate for the product (from 0% for crude oil to 37.5% for some footwear), plus 12.5% forced-labor tariff, plus 25% Brazil Section 301 unless the product is exempt. Leather shoes at 8.5% MFN pay 46% in total; wooden furniture 37.5%; coffee 0% (exempt from both); steel 50% under Section 232.

How do US tariffs affect Brazilian sourcing for importers?

Brazilian manufactured goods became markedly more expensive in July 2026: most now carry 37.5 points of Section 301 duties on top of MFN. Commodities largely escaped: coffee, beef, orange juice, crude oil, iron ore and pulp are exempt from both the 25% Brazil duty and the 12.5% forced-labor tariff. Ethanol and soybeans are exempt from neither; softwood lumber pays the 10% Section 232 tariff instead of both. Civil aircraft and parts are exempt from both. Recalculate landed costs by exact HS code — the exemptions are line-by-line.

What is Brazil's tariff rate on US imports?

Brazil applies MFN tariff rates as a Mercosur member — rates range from 0% to 35% (the 'Common External Tariff'). Most manufactured goods face 14–20% in Brazil. The US-Brazil bilateral trade relationship has been contentious — Brazil imposed retaliatory tariffs on selected US goods (motorcycles, ethanol, paper products) in response to US steel tariffs. In 2026, the trade relationship is under active renegotiation.
